PUGLIA

The region of Puglia (anciently named Apulia from the Apuli population which lived there) is located on the southern side of the Italian peninsula, looking over the Adriatic and Ionic seas. Its territory is mainly of a plain and hilly nature and only a small part is mountainous in the area of the Mountains of Dàunia which reach a height of about 1.100m. The Lesina and Varano lakes are part of the territory. The region has scarce water resources and it is one of the regions where it rains the least. The capital city of the region is Bari, whereas other provinces are Brindisi, Foggia, Lecce, Taranto.

Tourism in Apulia.
Tourism is an important resource for the region of Apulia, although it is a bit blocked due to the lack of adequate structures, however much effort is being made to improve the existing ones. Apulia has beautiful resources and natural sceneries, besides areas of historical, cultural and artistic interest which are more frequently visited. A well-known and tourist-visited place is the promontory of the Gargano, another tourist attraction is the " Umbra Forest " which doesn't mean of the region of Umbria, rather it intends a shaded forest made up of huge secular trees that have kept their look and natural vigour throughout the years, although there is a hypothesis that in ancient times it was inhabited by a population of the Umbria region.
In the Murgie there are the famous Castellana Caves and we must not forget to mention the famous "Trulli di Alberobello", the particular cone-shaped constructions which can be found only in Apulia. These are well-kept and restored and are visited by more and more tourists who enjoy not only visiting them but staying there as well.
