POSITANO on the AMALFI COST
Positano, on the Amalfi Coast, is one of Italy's most romantic destinations. The picturesque town is built vertically on the face of a cliff, making for stunning views of the sea. There are romantic restaurants with fantastic seafood and sea views. With its relatively mild climate, Positano can be visited year round.
Positano
is a small town on the Amalfi Coast (Costiera Amalfitana), in Campania,
Italy. The main part of the city sits in an enclave in the hills leading
down to the coast.
Positano was a port of the Amalfi Republic in medieval times, and prospered
in the 16th and 17th centuries. But by the mid-19th century, the town
had fallen on hard times.
Positano was a relatively poor fishing village during the first half of
the 20th century. It began to attract large numbers of tourists in the
1950s, especially after John Steinbeck published his essay about Positano
in Harper's Bazaar in May, 1953: "Positano bites deep", Steinbeck
wrote. "It is a dream place that isn't quite real when you are there
and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone."
The Amalfi
Coast, or Costiera Amalfitana in Italian, is a stretch of coastline on
the southern side of the Sorrentine Peninsula of Italy (Province of Salerno),
extending from Positano in the west to Vietri sul Mare in the east. The
towns lying on the Amalfi Coast are Vietri sul Mare, Cetara, Maiori, Minori,
Ravello, Scala, Atrani, Amalfi, Conca dei Marini, Furore, Praiano and
Positano.
Renowned for its rugged terrain, scenic beauty, picturesque towns and
diversity, the Amalfi Coast is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
