BASILICATA
The region of Basilicata is located in the southern part of Italy and is also known as "Lucania", probably deriving from the meaning of this word in Greek "Leucos", which has the same connotation in Latin - white or bright. Its territory is almost half mountainous with only a small part of plains, situated in the coast area, looking over the Ionic Sea. The highest point of the region reaches 2267m.on Mount Pollino. The capital city is Potenza (70.000 per.) which, together with the province of Matera (50.000 per.) are the only two large cities, since the rest of the territory is characterized by small towns such as Pisticci, Metaponto, Policoro and Melfi. Basilicata is one of the regions of Italy with the lowest living density.

Tourism in the region of Basilicata is not very developed, although it
is growing. Some mountain areas and Maratea, one of the most famous beach
areas of the region, are worth mentioning. Maratea is on the Tyrrhenian
Sea, whereas down south there is a 40km fine white sandy coast confining
with the Ionic Sea. There are numerous hotels in this area and these are
expanding and are increasing with time. The most famous resorts are the
Metaponto Beach, Nova Siri, Scanzano and Policoro.
